Convert a bank statement PDF toward OFX import

OFX is the format behind QBO and QFX bank files. This page explains how statement PDFs become structured transaction data for OFX-importing software.

What OFX is

OFX (Open Financial Exchange) is the standard format banks use to deliver transactions to accounting software. QuickBooks Desktop's QBO files and Quicken's QFX files are OFX variants. Software that imports OFX needs, for each transaction: a date, a description, a signed amount and, where available, the running balance.

How the converter helps

The converter extracts exactly those fields from a statement PDF, normalizes them into standard columns, verifies them against the statement's balances, and exports them (Excel, CSV, QuickBooks and Xero layouts), ready for OFX-based workflows in tools such as Quicken and QuickBooks Desktop.

How it works, step by step

  1. Download your statement PDF. Sign in to your bank's online banking, open Statements or Documents, and download the period you need as a PDF.
  2. Upload it to the converter. Add the PDF (or several, for batch conversion) to the tool on this page.
  3. Check the reconciliation result. The converter verifies the transactions against the statement's balances and flags any row that does not tie.
  4. Download your file. Choose Excel, CSV, QuickBooks or Xero format and import it into your software.

These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.

Questions and answers

Is a PDF the same as an OFX file?

No. A PDF is a print layout; an OFX file is structured data. Converting means reading the transactions out of the PDF layout and writing them as data — which is what the converter does.

What does the reconciliation check do?

Where the statement prints opening and closing (or running) balances, the converter adds up the extracted transactions and compares the result with the statement itself. If the numbers do not tie, the conversion is flagged and the mismatched rows are marked — a failed check is never shown as a success.

Are my statement files kept?

No. Uploaded files and generated exports are stored only briefly to complete the download and are automatically deleted within 15 minutes.
