Statements first, spreadsheets second. What follows is how Zions Bank files its statements, how to download the exact periods a job requires, and how those PDFs become verified data.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
When statements are wanted for an application — a mortgage file, a tenancy, a visa — completeness beats speed: underwriters and case workers read the pages in order and notice gaps. Download the full statements for every month requested, including the pages carrying balances and account identification, and keep the original PDFs unedited; annotations belong on copies. The converted files are for your own working numbers, never a substitute for the bank's document.
Expect the standard regional-bank set: monthly statements for checking and savings with opening and closing balances and a running balance on most layouts, card statements on the Previous / New Balance pattern where the bank issues its own cards, and periodic statements for CDs and money market accounts. Each type converts separately, against its own balances. Zions statements typically run as a single chronological history with running balances.
If you are the client reading this because your bookkeeper or accountant asked for statements: download the full set in one sitting, every account and every month on their list, and send the PDFs exactly as the bank issued them. Do not photograph pages, do not merge months into one file, and do not edit anything out — a missing transaction is far more expensive than an embarrassing one, and your bookkeeper works under confidentiality either way. If a month is missing from the archive, say so; a known gap is a solvable problem.
Either reaches the statements, but the website's archive is often deeper and multi-month downloading is faster with a keyboard. Use the app for single recent months, the website for history.
Usually the download was interrupted, or the file is a print-view export rather than the issued PDF. Re-download from the statements area; if the bank offers both a print and a PDF option, take the PDF.
Statements close on a cycle date set by the bank, which is often a few days before or after month end. Work in statement periods when you import — the closing date on the document is the period's end, whatever the calendar says — and let the balance chain, not the calendar, tell you whether a month is missing.
Yes, the app reaches the same archive, and for a month or two it is the quickest route. For a year of history the website is usually faster: a deeper archive view, several downloads in a row, and files that land somewhere you can name and file properly.
Thirteen per account: the twelve months of the year plus the December statement before it, whose closing balance proves the year's opening figure. Add any account that was open for part of the year, including ones closed mid-year.
