Valley statements typically organize activity by section with a daily balance summary.
Every statement carries its own test inside it. Add the opening balance to the transactions and you must land on the closing balance; walk the running balance and every row must step correctly from the one before. A conversion that passes both tests has earned trust; one that fails gets fixed against the PDF, not imported and hoped for. That is why the check runs before download here — the methodology page sets out the details.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Reconciliation goes faster when you know the document's habits. On a Valley National Bank statement, check where fees and interest sit — inside the chronological flow or in a closing section of their own — because that is where unrecorded items hide. Confirm the statement's closing date matches the period you think you are closing; cycle dates drift from calendar months. And keep the source straight: reconcile against the statement filed under Statements in Valley online banking and the mobile app, the bank's own record of the month.
An account is only fully proven when two different comparisons agree: the file against the statement (was the data read correctly?) and the books against the file (was it entered and categorized without loss?). Skipping the first makes the second prove the wrong thing beautifully — the software will happily reconcile to a file that misread the statement. Keeping the two checks separate, in that order, is what makes a discrepancy localizable in minutes.
Work the flagged rows first — the check marks exactly where the arithmetic breaks. The causes section on this page lists the usual suspects in order of likelihood.
Either that transaction is missing from the file or it is in twice. Search the converted file for the amount: zero hits means a dropped row, two hits where the statement shows one means a duplicate.
A sign error: the transaction was read as money in when it was money out, or the reverse. The totals move by twice the amount because the correction has to both remove the wrong entry and add the right one.
You can import in batches, but prove the months individually and in order. Three months reconciled as one blob hides which month owns a difference; the chain check needs each month's closing balance separately.
Not necessarily — two errors can cancel. Agreement of balances is a hint, not a proof; the proof is the transaction-level comparison a reconciliation performs. Convert and check the statements to be sure.
