Downloading statements sounds trivial until a year of them has to agree with itself. This guide covers the Valley National Bank archive properly: where statements live, which file to take, and how to keep a long download complete.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Statements are issued per account, and access follows the account's authorized signers. On a joint account either holder can usually download; on business accounts, users with view-only online access may or may not see the documents area depending on how the business enrolled. If the statements you need sit behind permissions you do not hold, the account owner downloading them directly is faster than any workaround — and the PDFs are all you need to hand over.
Expect the standard regional-bank set: monthly statements for checking and savings with opening and closing balances and a running balance on most layouts, card statements on the Previous / New Balance pattern where the bank issues its own cards, and periodic statements for CDs and money market accounts. Each type converts separately, against its own balances. Valley statements typically organize activity by section with a daily balance summary.
Online access usually ends when an account closes, and with it the self-serve archive. Former customers can typically still obtain statement copies by request — expect identity verification and a research turnaround rather than an instant download. Order them before the cleanup deadline, not during it. When the copies arrive as paper or scans, they convert through the OCR route and are reconciled against their printed balances like any other statement.
After signing in to Valley online banking and the mobile app, open the account and look for Statements (or Documents / eStatements). The step-by-step section above walks the pattern; exact menu labels change over time.
Online archives typically cover several years. For older periods, request research copies from the bank — paper or scanned copies convert through OCR with the same balance check.
Both. The PDF is the record; the converted Excel or CSV is the working file. Sending the pair means any figure can be traced back to the bank's own document in one step.
Usually the download was interrupted, or the file is a print-view export rather than the issued PDF. Re-download from the statements area; if the bank offers both a print and a PDF option, take the PDF.
Many banks offer a transaction download in CSV or OFX alongside the PDF statements. That covers recent activity, but the PDF statement remains the document with balances — the thing reconciliation is checked against.
