Reconciliation is the proof that the books and the bank agree. This page gives the month-end workflow for USAA Federal Savings Bank statements and the fixes for when they do not tie.
Expect a USAA Federal Savings Bank deposit statement to open and close with printed balances and to group card activity separately, under its own Previous and New Balance pair. From its headquarters in San Antonio, Texas, USAA Federal Savings Bank issues statements per account and per period through online banking.
Think of the statement as self-auditing. It opens at one balance, lists everything that moved, and closes at another — and if the list is complete and correctly read, the numbers cannot help but agree. Reconciliation is checking that they do, before the data is trusted downstream. Done at conversion time, the check has a practical shape: the file either reproduces the statement's balances or it is flagged with the exact rows where the walk breaks. The methodology page documents the method.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
A USAA Federal Savings Bank statement repays thirty seconds of orientation before any numbers move. Locate the balance pair the month is anchored to — opening and closing on deposit accounts, Previous and New on cards — and scan the transaction list for the period's biggest items, since a reconciliation difference is most often one of them. Note any section subtotals the layout prints; each one is a free checkpoint the converter's running-balance walk also uses. Pull the PDF from Statements & Documents in USAA Federal Savings Bank online banking (website and app) so you are always working from the issued document, not a re-export.
The strongest property of a reconciled year is the chain: twelve statements where every closing balance hands over to the next opening balance without a seam. Build the chain and a whole class of errors — missing months, duplicated months, a statement converted twice — becomes impossible to hide. When a chain breaks, the break itself localizes the problem to the seam between two specific months, which is a five-minute investigation instead of a day of searching.
Either that transaction is missing from the file or it is in twice. Search the converted file for the amount: zero hits means a dropped row, two hits where the statement shows one means a duplicate.
Yes — scanned statements convert through OCR and go through the identical checks. Because OCR can misread digits, treat flagged rows on scans with extra care and always resolve them against the image.
Not necessarily — two errors can cancel. Agreement of balances is a hint, not a proof; the proof is the transaction-level comparison a reconciliation performs. Convert and check the statements to be sure.
Banks post corrections as their own dated lines — a reversal and a corrected entry, or a single adjustment line. Enter them exactly as printed, in the period they appear, even if the original transaction sits in an earlier month. The statement is the record; reconciling means matching it, and the pair nets to the truth.
Usually not an error: running balances depend on the order transactions are walked, and the software may order same-day items differently from the bank. Agreement at the closing balance with every transaction present is the substance; mid-month ordering differences on the same posting date are cosmetic.
