Statements first, spreadsheets second. What follows is how USAA Federal Savings Bank files its statements, how to download the exact periods a job requires, and how those PDFs become verified data.
Privacy: uploaded files and generated exports are stored only briefly to complete your download and are automatically deleted within 15 minutes. Files are never used for any other purpose.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Statements are issued per account, and access follows the account's authorized signers. On a joint account either holder can usually download; on business accounts, users with view-only online access may or may not see the documents area depending on how the business enrolled. If the statements you need sit behind permissions you do not hold, the account owner downloading them directly is faster than any workaround — and the PDFs are all you need to hand over.
A national bank relationship usually spans several statement families: checking and savings with opening/closing balances, money market accounts on the same pattern, CDs that may statement quarterly or at term events, and credit cards on the Previous / New Balance pattern. Each family converts on its own check. Before a cleanup, inventory which families the relationship actually has — the card statements are the ones most often forgotten. Expect a USAA Federal Savings Bank deposit statement to open and close with printed balances and to group card activity separately, under its own Previous and New Balance pair. From its headquarters in San Antonio, Texas, USAA Federal Savings Bank issues statements per account and per period through online banking.
Online access usually ends when an account closes, and with it the self-serve archive. Former customers can typically still obtain statement copies by request — expect identity verification and a research turnaround rather than an instant download. Order them before the cleanup deadline, not during it. When the copies arrive as paper or scans, they convert through the OCR route and are reconciled against their printed balances like any other statement.
It adds the extracted transactions to the statement's opening balance and compares the result with the closing balance — and checks running balances row by row where printed. Downloads that do not tie are flagged, never passed silently.
Separate months. Each monthly statement carries its own opening and closing balances, which is what the verification works from — and month-by-month files import in order without surgery.
Many banks offer a transaction download in CSV or OFX alongside the PDF statements. That covers recent activity, but the PDF statement remains the document with balances — the thing reconciliation is checked against.
Usually, yes. The converter detects pages stored rotated and reads them in their displayed orientation; a genuinely sideways scan is reported honestly rather than guessed at. If a page is flagged, re-scanning that page flat and upright is the reliable fix.
Thirteen per account: the twelve months of the year plus the December statement before it, whose closing balance proves the year's opening figure. Add any account that was open for part of the year, including ones closed mid-year.
