Reconciliation is the proof that the books and the bank agree. This page gives the month-end workflow for Truist Bank statements and the fixes for when they do not tie.
Truist was formed from BB&T and SunTrust, so archives spanning the merger can mix two statement layouts — convert each era on its own and expect the older PDFs to read differently.
Whatever the layout, the arithmetic underneath a statement is always the same shape: an opening figure, the period's transactions, and a closing figure the transactions must reproduce exactly. Reconciliation is the discipline of insisting on that proof for every month, in order. The converter runs the check at conversion time — totals first, then the running balance row by row — so a bad file is caught before it reaches the books, and the methodology page explains both checks in full.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
A Truist Bank statement repays thirty seconds of orientation before any numbers move. Locate the balance pair the month is anchored to — opening and closing on deposit accounts, Previous and New on cards — and scan the transaction list for the period's biggest items, since a reconciliation difference is most often one of them. Note any section subtotals the layout prints; each one is a free checkpoint the converter's running-balance walk also uses. Pull the PDF from Statements in Truist online banking and the Truist app so you are always working from the issued document, not a re-export.
Reconciliation knowledge tends to live in one person's head, which makes it fragile. The defence is a written routine — this page is a template — plus the filed evidence trio for each month: statement, converted file, result. A successor who inherits both can reproduce any month without interviewing anyone, and the standard survives staff changes, vacations and growth.
Either that transaction is missing from the file or it is in twice. Search the converted file for the amount: zero hits means a dropped row, two hits where the statement shows one means a duplicate.
A sign error: the transaction was read as money in when it was money out, or the reverse. The totals move by twice the amount because the correction has to both remove the wrong entry and add the right one.
Yes — scanned statements convert through OCR and go through the identical checks. Because OCR can misread digits, treat flagged rows on scans with extra care and always resolve them against the image.
The statement PDF, the converted file, and the reconciliation result for that month, filed together. That trio lets anyone re-perform the month later without asking you anything.
Yes. Small differences are usually misread digits or rounding on a split transaction, and they compound silently if waved through. A reconciliation that tolerates cents teaches the whole file to drift.
