Everything starts with the PDF. Here is where Rockland Trust keeps its statements, how far back the archive reaches, and how to pull exactly the months you need.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
For catch-up work the limiting factor is rarely conversion — it is archive depth. Online banking usually keeps a rolling multi-year archive of statement PDFs. Older than that, request research copies from the bank; if they arrive as paper or scans, the converter reads them with OCR and reconciles the result against the printed balances exactly as it does for digital PDFs.
Expect the standard regional-bank set: monthly statements for checking and savings with opening and closing balances and a running balance on most layouts, card statements on the Previous / New Balance pattern where the bank issues its own cards, and periodic statements for CDs and money market accounts. Each type converts separately, against its own balances. A Rockland Trust statement typically shows the balance after each transaction on deposit accounts, so the closing figure can be traced row by row through the month. The institution is based in Hanover, Massachusetts; its statement archive is organized per account, newest period first.
If you are the client reading this because your bookkeeper or accountant asked for statements: download the full set in one sitting, every account and every month on their list, and send the PDFs exactly as the bank issued them. Do not photograph pages, do not merge months into one file, and do not edit anything out — a missing transaction is far more expensive than an embarrassing one, and your bookkeeper works under confidentiality either way. If a month is missing from the archive, say so; a known gap is a solvable problem.
The digital PDF is always the cleanest input. A paper statement can be scanned flat at a steady resolution and converted through OCR; its result goes through the same reconciliation check, and flagged rows should be reviewed against the scan.
It adds the extracted transactions to the statement's opening balance and compares the result with the closing balance — and checks running balances row by row where printed. Downloads that do not tie are flagged, never passed silently.
Yes — that is the normal flow. Download the PDFs and send them as issued; your bookkeeper converts and verifies them. Never send online banking passwords; statements are all a bookkeeper needs from the bank.
Common causes: the account statemented quarterly in that period, the account was opened or closed mid-cycle, or the statement sits under a combined-statement view. Check the neighbouring months' balances — if they chain, the period is covered.
Yes, the app reaches the same archive, and for a month or two it is the quickest route. For a year of history the website is usually faster: a deeper archive view, several downloads in a row, and files that land somewhere you can name and file properly.
