Reconciliation is the proof that the books and the bank agree. This page gives the month-end workflow for Red River Bank statements and the fixes for when they do not tie.

On most Red River Bank layouts the balance column steps down the page with the transactions, so the last figure on the last page is the closing balance itself. Red River Bank (Alexandria, Louisiana) files its statements in the documents area of online banking, organized by account and closing date.
There is a quiet compound interest to reconciling monthly: each proven month makes the next one cheaper, because the opening balance never needs investigating. The expensive reconciliation is always the first one after a long gap, where every historical shortcut is still hiding. Whether the gap is behind you or ahead of you, the method is the same — prove the file against the statement at conversion, then prove the books against the file in the software. The methodology page documents how the first proof runs.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Start a Red River Bank reconciliation by reading the statement's summary block — most layouts print one. It states the opening balance, totals for each activity type, and the closing balance, which gives you four numbers to aim at before any row is touched. If the converted file reproduces the summary totals, remaining differences are categorization questions, not reading errors. The document itself comes from Statements and Documents in Red River Bank online banking (website and app); reconcile only against that issued original, never against a re-export or a screenshot.
Reconciliation knowledge tends to live in one person's head, which makes it fragile. The defence is a written routine — this page is a template — plus the filed evidence trio for each month: statement, converted file, result. A successor who inherits both can reproduce any month without interviewing anyone, and the standard survives staff changes, vacations and growth.
Deposit statements print an opening and closing balance, and most print a running balance per transaction. Card statements print Previous and New Balances instead. The reconciliation check uses whichever the statement provides; a statement with no balances at all is reported as unverified.
Convert and check each account's statements separately — balances are per account — then reconcile each account in your software. Combined Excel exports keep one sheet per statement so accounts never blur.
The statement PDF, the converted file, and the reconciliation result for that month, filed together. That trio lets anyone re-perform the month later without asking you anything.
Not necessarily — two errors can cancel. Agreement of balances is a hint, not a proof; the proof is the transaction-level comparison a reconciliation performs. Convert and check the statements to be sure.
When an account changes product, banks sometimes issue a short final statement for the old product and a first statement for the new one. Convert and prove both; the old one's closing balance should equal the new one's opening balance, and that handover is the seam to verify before anything else.
