As a credit union, Polish & Slavic Federal Credit Union statements the membership rather than a single account: share savings, checking and sometimes loan activity are commonly combined in one document, opening with a summary of each account. From its headquarters in Brooklyn, New York, Polish & Slavic Federal Credit Union issues statements per account and per period through online banking.
Every statement carries its own test inside it. Add the opening balance to the transactions and you must land on the closing balance; walk the running balance and every row must step correctly from the one before. A conversion that passes both tests has earned trust; one that fails gets fixed against the PDF, not imported and hoped for. That is why the check runs before download here — the methodology page sets out the details.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Start a Polish & Slavic Federal Credit Union reconciliation by reading the statement's summary block — most layouts print one. It states the opening balance, totals for each activity type, and the closing balance, which gives you four numbers to aim at before any row is touched. If the converted file reproduces the summary totals, remaining differences are categorization questions, not reading errors. The document itself comes from Statements in Polish & Slavic Federal Credit Union online banking and the mobile app; reconcile only against that issued original, never against a re-export or a screenshot.
The strongest property of a reconciled year is the chain: twelve statements where every closing balance hands over to the next opening balance without a seam. Build the chain and a whole class of errors — missing months, duplicated months, a statement converted twice — becomes impossible to hide. When a chain breaks, the break itself localizes the problem to the seam between two specific months, which is a five-minute investigation instead of a day of searching.
Deposit statements print an opening and closing balance, and most print a running balance per transaction. Card statements print Previous and New Balances instead. The reconciliation check uses whichever the statement provides; a statement with no balances at all is reported as unverified.
They check different things. The conversion check proves the file matches the statement; the software reconciliation proves the books match the file. Doing both, in that order, is what makes a month solid.
Either that transaction is missing from the file or it is in twice. Search the converted file for the amount: zero hits means a dropped row, two hits where the statement shows one means a duplicate.
The statement PDF, the converted file, and the reconciliation result for that month, filed together. That trio lets anyone re-perform the month later without asking you anything.
Yes, with lower stakes and the same shape: opening balance, interest and any transfers, closing balance. Savings accounts statement monthly at most banks; CDs often statement quarterly or at term events. Prove each document that exists, and let the chain check span the quiet periods.
