Downloading statements sounds trivial until a year of them has to agree with itself. This guide covers the Northern Trust archive properly: where statements live, which file to take, and how to keep a long download complete.
Privacy: uploaded files and generated exports are stored only briefly to complete your download and are automatically deleted within 15 minutes. Files are never used for any other purpose.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Statement archives are organized by closing date, newest first, and usually searchable or filterable by year. For a full-year catch-up, work the list methodically from the oldest month forward and save each PDF as you go — partial downloads are how gap months happen. If the archive offers a combined or annual document, prefer the individual monthly statements: each one carries its own opening and closing balances, which is what the reconciliation check needs.
A national bank relationship usually spans several statement families: checking and savings with opening/closing balances, money market accounts on the same pattern, CDs that may statement quarterly or at term events, and credit cards on the Previous / New Balance pattern. Each family converts on its own check. Before a cleanup, inventory which families the relationship actually has — the card statements are the ones most often forgotten. Deposit statements at Northern Trust typically run in date order with the balance carried on each row; its card statements follow the Previous Balance / New Balance structure instead. Northern Trust is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, and its statements are issued centrally — the same document family serves every branch and channel.
Online access usually ends when an account closes, and with it the self-serve archive. Former customers can typically still obtain statement copies by request — expect identity verification and a research turnaround rather than an instant download. Order them before the cleanup deadline, not during it. When the copies arrive as paper or scans, they convert through the OCR route and are reconciled against their printed balances like any other statement.
After signing in to Northern Trust online banking (website and app), open the account and look for eStatements (or Documents / eStatements). The step-by-step section above walks the pattern; exact menu labels change over time.
The digital PDF is always the cleanest input. A paper statement can be scanned flat at a steady resolution and converted through OCR; its result goes through the same reconciliation check, and flagged rows should be reviewed against the scan.
Either reaches the statements, but the website's archive is often deeper and multi-month downloading is faster with a keyboard. Use the app for single recent months, the website for history.
Some relationships offer combined statements covering several accounts in one PDF. Download it once, then convert each account's section separately so every account keeps its own balance check.
Usually, yes. The converter detects pages stored rotated and reads them in their displayed orientation; a genuinely sideways scan is reported honestly rather than guessed at. If a page is flagged, re-scanning that page flat and upright is the reliable fix.
