If a HomeTrust Bank month will not tie out, the answer is in the statement itself — it always is. This page is the systematic way to find it: anchor the balances, walk the rows, and read the difference as a clue.
Deposit statements at HomeTrust Bank typically carry opening and closing balances with activity in posting order; card statements, where the bank issues its own cards, use Previous and New Balances. HomeTrust Bank is headquartered in Asheville, North Carolina, and its statements are issued centrally — the same document family serves every branch and channel.
Every statement carries its own test inside it. Add the opening balance to the transactions and you must land on the closing balance; walk the running balance and every row must step correctly from the one before. A conversion that passes both tests has earned trust; one that fails gets fixed against the PDF, not imported and hoped for. That is why the check runs before download here — the methodology page sets out the details.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Start a HomeTrust Bank reconciliation by reading the statement's summary block — most layouts print one. It states the opening balance, totals for each activity type, and the closing balance, which gives you four numbers to aim at before any row is touched. If the converted file reproduces the summary totals, remaining differences are categorization questions, not reading errors. The document itself comes from Statements and Documents in HomeTrust Bank online banking (website and app); reconcile only against that issued original, never against a re-export or a screenshot.
Most relationships reconcile as a set, not as islands: payments leave the deposit account and land on the card statement, transfers move between accounts, and each leg appears on two statements. Reconcile the deposit account first, then the card, and expect the cross-account transactions to explain each other's odd rows. A difference that survives both reconciliations, in equal and opposite amounts, is almost always a transfer recorded on one side only.
Deposit statements print an opening and closing balance, and most print a running balance per transaction. Card statements print Previous and New Balances instead. The reconciliation check uses whichever the statement provides; a statement with no balances at all is reported as unverified.
They check different things. The conversion check proves the file matches the statement; the software reconciliation proves the books match the file. Doing both, in that order, is what makes a month solid.
Convert and check each account's statements separately — balances are per account — then reconcile each account in your software. Combined Excel exports keep one sheet per statement so accounts never blur.
A sign error: the transaction was read as money in when it was money out, or the reverse. The totals move by twice the amount because the correction has to both remove the wrong entry and add the right one.
When an account changes product, banks sometimes issue a short final statement for the old product and a first statement for the new one. Convert and prove both; the old one's closing balance should equal the new one's opening balance, and that handover is the seam to verify before anything else.
