Working with BCU statements month after month? This page sets out the reconciliation routine: what to check, in what order, and what the usual failures mean.
A BCU statement typically opens with a per-account summary, then lists each account's transactions in date order with its own balances — members with only a share savings account may be statemented quarterly. BCU (Vernon Hills, Illinois) files its statements in the documents area of online banking, organized by account and closing date.
Whatever the layout, the arithmetic underneath a statement is always the same shape: an opening figure, the period's transactions, and a closing figure the transactions must reproduce exactly. Reconciliation is the discipline of insisting on that proof for every month, in order. The converter runs the check at conversion time — totals first, then the running balance row by row — so a bad file is caught before it reaches the books, and the methodology page explains both checks in full.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Before reconciling a BCU statement, read it once as a document rather than a data source. Find the opening balance on the first page and the closing balance where the period ends, then notice how the middle is organized — one chronological run, or sections for deposits, withdrawals and fees. That structure tells you how a difference will behave: in a sectioned statement, compare section totals first; in a chronological one, the running balance walk is your fastest instrument. The statements themselves are filed under Statements in the BCU website and mobile app, so the document you reconcile is always the bank-issued original.
Inherited books deserve a colder eye: trust nothing that is not tied to a statement. Start at the most recent statement and work backwards only as far as the engagement requires, proving each month against its own document before accepting its closing balance as the next month's ground. Where a predecessor forced a reconciliation to agree, the plug usually sits in an adjustments or suspense entry — find those first, because every honest month built on a plugged balance inherits the error.
Monthly, in step with the statements. Reconciling a year in one sitting is exactly the catch-up scenario the batch converter exists to shorten — and month-by-month chaining is what makes it provable.
They check different things. The conversion check proves the file matches the statement; the software reconciliation proves the books match the file. Doing both, in that order, is what makes a month solid.
Convert and check each account's statements separately — balances are per account — then reconcile each account in your software. Combined Excel exports keep one sheet per statement so accounts never blur.
A sign error: the transaction was read as money in when it was money out, or the reverse. The totals move by twice the amount because the correction has to both remove the wrong entry and add the right one.
The statement PDF, the converted file, and the reconciliation result for that month, filed together. That trio lets anyone re-perform the month later without asking you anything.
