If a VyStar Credit Union month will not tie out, the answer is in the statement itself — it always is. This page is the systematic way to find it: anchor the balances, walk the rows, and read the difference as a clue.
VyStar Credit Union member statements typically combine share and checking activity in one document family, each account carrying its own opening and closing balances. VyStar Credit Union (Jacksonville, Florida) files its statements in the documents area of online banking, organized by account and closing date.
There is a quiet compound interest to reconciling monthly: each proven month makes the next one cheaper, because the opening balance never needs investigating. The expensive reconciliation is always the first one after a long gap, where every historical shortcut is still hiding. Whether the gap is behind you or ahead of you, the method is the same — prove the file against the statement at conversion, then prove the books against the file in the software. The methodology page documents how the first proof runs.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
A VyStar Credit Union statement repays thirty seconds of orientation before any numbers move. Locate the balance pair the month is anchored to — opening and closing on deposit accounts, Previous and New on cards — and scan the transaction list for the period's biggest items, since a reconciliation difference is most often one of them. Note any section subtotals the layout prints; each one is a free checkpoint the converter's running-balance walk also uses. Pull the PDF from Statements & Documents in the VyStar Credit Union website and mobile app so you are always working from the issued document, not a re-export.
The strongest property of a reconciled year is the chain: twelve statements where every closing balance hands over to the next opening balance without a seam. Build the chain and a whole class of errors — missing months, duplicated months, a statement converted twice — becomes impossible to hide. When a chain breaks, the break itself localizes the problem to the seam between two specific months, which is a five-minute investigation instead of a day of searching.
Convert and check each account's statements separately — balances are per account — then reconcile each account in your software. Combined Excel exports keep one sheet per statement so accounts never blur.
Either that transaction is missing from the file or it is in twice. Search the converted file for the amount: zero hits means a dropped row, two hits where the statement shows one means a duplicate.
A sign error: the transaction was read as money in when it was money out, or the reverse. The totals move by twice the amount because the correction has to both remove the wrong entry and add the right one.
Not necessarily — two errors can cancel. Agreement of balances is a hint, not a proof; the proof is the transaction-level comparison a reconciliation performs. Convert and check the statements to be sure.
Banks post corrections as their own dated lines — a reversal and a corrected entry, or a single adjustment line. Enter them exactly as printed, in the period they appear, even if the original transaction sits in an earlier month. The statement is the record; reconciling means matching it, and the pair nets to the truth.
