If a Synchrony Bank month will not tie out, the answer is in the statement itself — it always is. This page is the systematic way to find it: anchor the balances, walk the rows, and read the difference as a clue.

Synchrony issues savings statements of its own and powers many retail card programs, whose card statements carry the Synchrony layout.
Bookkeepers sometimes describe the statement as the referee, and the metaphor earns its keep: the bank's record is the one both the books and the conversion must satisfy. A converted file is therefore reconciled twice in a healthy workflow — once against the statement at conversion, and once inside the accounting software when the month is closed. Skipping the first reconciliation does not save the work; it moves the hunt for errors into the tool least able to localize them. The full method is documented on the methodology page.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Start a Synchrony Bank reconciliation by reading the statement's summary block — most layouts print one. It states the opening balance, totals for each activity type, and the closing balance, which gives you four numbers to aim at before any row is touched. If the converted file reproduces the summary totals, remaining differences are categorization questions, not reading errors. The document itself comes from Statements in Synchrony Bank online banking and the mobile app; reconcile only against that issued original, never against a re-export or a screenshot.
The strongest property of a reconciled year is the chain: twelve statements where every closing balance hands over to the next opening balance without a seam. Build the chain and a whole class of errors — missing months, duplicated months, a statement converted twice — becomes impossible to hide. When a chain breaks, the break itself localizes the problem to the seam between two specific months, which is a five-minute investigation instead of a day of searching.
They check different things. The conversion check proves the file matches the statement; the software reconciliation proves the books match the file. Doing both, in that order, is what makes a month solid.
A sign error: the transaction was read as money in when it was money out, or the reverse. The totals move by twice the amount because the correction has to both remove the wrong entry and add the right one.
The statement PDF, the converted file, and the reconciliation result for that month, filed together. That trio lets anyone re-perform the month later without asking you anything.
You can import in batches, but prove the months individually and in order. Three months reconciled as one blob hides which month owns a difference; the chain check needs each month's closing balance separately.
Not necessarily — two errors can cancel. Agreement of balances is a hint, not a proof; the proof is the transaction-level comparison a reconciliation performs. Convert and check the statements to be sure.
