Every Summit Credit Union statement can prove itself — opening balance, transactions, closing balance. Reconciliation is simply running that proof before the numbers are used. This page shows how, month by month.
Summit Credit Union issues member statements as PDFs through online banking; combined statements cover several accounts in one document, and each account's section carries its own balance pair. The institution is based in Madison, Wisconsin; its statement archive is organized per account, newest period first.
There is a quiet compound interest to reconciling monthly: each proven month makes the next one cheaper, because the opening balance never needs investigating. The expensive reconciliation is always the first one after a long gap, where every historical shortcut is still hiding. Whether the gap is behind you or ahead of you, the method is the same — prove the file against the statement at conversion, then prove the books against the file in the software. The methodology page documents how the first proof runs.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
One habit separates fast reconciliations from slow ones: read a Summit Credit Union statement in the order the bank printed it before sorting it any other way. Running balances only make sense in print order, pending items cluster at period boundaries in print order, and the bank's own section subtotals — free checkpoints — exist only in print order. Convert the PDF from Statements and Documents in the Summit Credit Union website and mobile app, walk it as printed, and let the accounting software do the reordering afterwards.
The strongest property of a reconciled year is the chain: twelve statements where every closing balance hands over to the next opening balance without a seam. Build the chain and a whole class of errors — missing months, duplicated months, a statement converted twice — becomes impossible to hide. When a chain breaks, the break itself localizes the problem to the seam between two specific months, which is a five-minute investigation instead of a day of searching.
Work the flagged rows first — the check marks exactly where the arithmetic breaks. The causes section on this page lists the usual suspects in order of likelihood.
A sign error: the transaction was read as money in when it was money out, or the reverse. The totals move by twice the amount because the correction has to both remove the wrong entry and add the right one.
Yes — scanned statements convert through OCR and go through the identical checks. Because OCR can misread digits, treat flagged rows on scans with extra care and always resolve them against the image.
You can import in batches, but prove the months individually and in order. Three months reconciled as one blob hides which month owns a difference; the chain check needs each month's closing balance separately.
Banks post corrections as their own dated lines — a reversal and a corrected entry, or a single adjustment line. Enter them exactly as printed, in the period they appear, even if the original transaction sits in an earlier month. The statement is the record; reconciling means matching it, and the pair nets to the truth.
