Every Royal Credit Union statement can prove itself — opening balance, transactions, closing balance. Reconciliation is simply running that proof before the numbers are used. This page shows how, month by month.
Royal Credit Union issues member statements as PDFs through online banking; combined statements cover several accounts in one document, and each account's section carries its own balance pair. Headquartered in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Royal Credit Union issues every account's statements through the same online banking platform.
Every statement carries its own test inside it. Add the opening balance to the transactions and you must land on the closing balance; walk the running balance and every row must step correctly from the one before. A conversion that passes both tests has earned trust; one that fails gets fixed against the PDF, not imported and hoped for. That is why the check runs before download here — the methodology page sets out the details.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Before reconciling a Royal Credit Union statement, read it once as a document rather than a data source. Find the opening balance on the first page and the closing balance where the period ends, then notice how the middle is organized — one chronological run, or sections for deposits, withdrawals and fees. That structure tells you how a difference will behave: in a sectioned statement, compare section totals first; in a chronological one, the running balance walk is your fastest instrument. The statements themselves are filed under Statements in Royal Credit Union online banking and the mobile app, so the document you reconcile is always the bank-issued original.
Inherited books deserve a colder eye: trust nothing that is not tied to a statement. Start at the most recent statement and work backwards only as far as the engagement requires, proving each month against its own document before accepting its closing balance as the next month's ground. Where a predecessor forced a reconciliation to agree, the plug usually sits in an adjustments or suspense entry — find those first, because every honest month built on a plugged balance inherits the error.
A cheque written but not yet cleared, or a deposit recorded but not yet at the bank, makes honest books differ from the statement by exactly those items. They are listed, carried forward, and expected to clear next month — they are not errors.
Yes. Small differences are usually misread digits or rounding on a split transaction, and they compound silently if waved through. A reconciliation that tolerates cents teaches the whole file to drift.
You can import in batches, but prove the months individually and in order. Three months reconciled as one blob hides which month owns a difference; the chain check needs each month's closing balance separately.
In larger setups, separation is a genuine control: the person reconciling is not the person who entered. In a one-person practice the monthly habit plus the filed evidence trio is the practical substitute.
Usually not an error: running balances depend on the order transactions are walked, and the software may order same-day items differently from the bank. Agreement at the closing balance with every transaction present is the substance; mid-month ordering differences on the same posting date are cosmetic.
