Month end with PenFed Credit Union means one question: do the books reproduce the bank's record to the cent? Here is the reconciliation workflow that answers it, and the short list of reasons it sometimes answers no.

PenFed member statements combine share and loan-adjacent account activity in one document family, issued to members through online banking.
Reconciliation fails in instructive ways, which is why it is worth doing before import rather than after. A difference the size of one transaction means a row is missing or doubled; twice a transaction means a sign flipped; a few cents means a digit was misread somewhere. The check on this page reports which pattern a statement fell into by naming the rows where the running balance breaks, so the hunt starts at the right row instead of the first page. The methodology page explains the arithmetic in full.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
One habit separates fast reconciliations from slow ones: read a PenFed Credit Union statement in the order the bank printed it before sorting it any other way. Running balances only make sense in print order, pending items cluster at period boundaries in print order, and the bank's own section subtotals — free checkpoints — exist only in print order. Convert the PDF from eStatements in PenFed online banking and the mobile app, walk it as printed, and let the accounting software do the reordering afterwards.
Monthly reconciliation is usually sold as tidiness, but its sharper value is detection. A transaction nobody recognizes, a fee that quietly changed size, a duplicate payment to the same vendor — all of them surface fastest when someone compares the books to the bank's record every single month, while amounts and memories are fresh. A year of unreconciled statements is where small problems go to become large ones; the monthly habit is the cheapest control a small organization owns.
Deposit statements print an opening and closing balance, and most print a running balance per transaction. Card statements print Previous and New Balances instead. The reconciliation check uses whichever the statement provides; a statement with no balances at all is reported as unverified.
They check different things. The conversion check proves the file matches the statement; the software reconciliation proves the books match the file. Doing both, in that order, is what makes a month solid.
Convert and check each account's statements separately — balances are per account — then reconcile each account in your software. Combined Excel exports keep one sheet per statement so accounts never blur.
A cheque written but not yet cleared, or a deposit recorded but not yet at the bank, makes honest books differ from the statement by exactly those items. They are listed, carried forward, and expected to clear next month — they are not errors.
Yes — scanned statements convert through OCR and go through the identical checks. Because OCR can misread digits, treat flagged rows on scans with extra care and always resolve them against the image.
