Need Pathward statements as PDFs — for the books, for a cleanup, for an application? This is the download playbook: the portal, the periods, older statements, and the next steps.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Statements close on a cycle date, not necessarily the last day of the month — note each account's closing day before planning a month-by-month import, because a statement month and a calendar month are not always the same thing. Online archives generally cover several years; deeper history is a bank research request, and scanned results still go through the full balance check.
A national bank relationship usually spans several statement families: checking and savings with opening/closing balances, money market accounts on the same pattern, CDs that may statement quarterly or at term events, and credit cards on the Previous / New Balance pattern. Each family converts on its own check. Before a cleanup, inventory which families the relationship actually has — the card statements are the ones most often forgotten. Pathward statements typically present one chronological transaction history per account: opening and closing balances on deposit accounts, Previous and New Balances on card statements. Pathward (Sioux Falls, South Dakota) files its statements in the documents area of online banking, organized by account and closing date.
If you are the client reading this because your bookkeeper or accountant asked for statements: download the full set in one sitting, every account and every month on their list, and send the PDFs exactly as the bank issued them. Do not photograph pages, do not merge months into one file, and do not edit anything out — a missing transaction is far more expensive than an embarrassing one, and your bookkeeper works under confidentiality either way. If a month is missing from the archive, say so; a known gap is a solvable problem.
It adds the extracted transactions to the statement's opening balance and compares the result with the closing balance — and checks running balances row by row where printed. Downloads that do not tie are flagged, never passed silently.
Both. The PDF is the record; the converted Excel or CSV is the working file. Sending the pair means any figure can be traced back to the bank's own document in one step.
Recent statements in online banking are self-serve. Research copies of older or closed-account statements are a bank service and policies vary — ask before ordering a long history, and check the online archive first.
Statements close on a cycle date set by the bank, which is often a few days before or after month end. Work in statement periods when you import — the closing date on the document is the period's end, whatever the calendar says — and let the balance chain, not the calendar, tell you whether a month is missing.
Thirteen per account: the twelve months of the year plus the December statement before it, whose closing balance proves the year's opening figure. Add any account that was open for part of the year, including ones closed mid-year.
