Reconciling is not bookkeeping's paperwork — it is the audit trail that makes every other number believable. The Patelco Credit Union version of the routine is on this page, balances first, exceptions documented.
Patelco Credit Union member statements typically combine share and checking activity in one document family, each account carrying its own opening and closing balances. From its headquarters in Dublin, California, Patelco Credit Union issues statements per account and per period through online banking.
Whatever the layout, the arithmetic underneath a statement is always the same shape: an opening figure, the period's transactions, and a closing figure the transactions must reproduce exactly. Reconciliation is the discipline of insisting on that proof for every month, in order. The converter runs the check at conversion time — totals first, then the running balance row by row — so a bad file is caught before it reaches the books, and the methodology page explains both checks in full.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Start a Patelco Credit Union reconciliation by reading the statement's summary block — most layouts print one. It states the opening balance, totals for each activity type, and the closing balance, which gives you four numbers to aim at before any row is touched. If the converted file reproduces the summary totals, remaining differences are categorization questions, not reading errors. The document itself comes from Statements and Documents in Patelco Credit Union online banking (website and app); reconcile only against that issued original, never against a re-export or a screenshot.
Inherited books deserve a colder eye: trust nothing that is not tied to a statement. Start at the most recent statement and work backwards only as far as the engagement requires, proving each month against its own document before accepting its closing balance as the next month's ground. Where a predecessor forced a reconciliation to agree, the plug usually sits in an adjustments or suspense entry — find those first, because every honest month built on a plugged balance inherits the error.
Deposit statements print an opening and closing balance, and most print a running balance per transaction. Card statements print Previous and New Balances instead. The reconciliation check uses whichever the statement provides; a statement with no balances at all is reported as unverified.
Convert and check each account's statements separately — balances are per account — then reconcile each account in your software. Combined Excel exports keep one sheet per statement so accounts never blur.
Either that transaction is missing from the file or it is in twice. Search the converted file for the amount: zero hits means a dropped row, two hits where the statement shows one means a duplicate.
A sign error: the transaction was read as money in when it was money out, or the reverse. The totals move by twice the amount because the correction has to both remove the wrong entry and add the right one.
You can import in batches, but prove the months individually and in order. Three months reconciled as one blob hides which month owns a difference; the chain check needs each month's closing balance separately.
