Working with Origin Bank statements month after month? This page sets out the reconciliation routine: what to check, in what order, and what the usual failures mean.
A Origin Bank statement typically shows the balance after each transaction on deposit accounts, so the closing figure can be traced row by row through the month. The institution is based in Ruston, Louisiana; its statement archive is organized per account, newest period first.
Think of the statement as self-auditing. It opens at one balance, lists everything that moved, and closes at another — and if the list is complete and correctly read, the numbers cannot help but agree. Reconciliation is checking that they do, before the data is trusted downstream. Done at conversion time, the check has a practical shape: the file either reproduces the statement's balances or it is flagged with the exact rows where the walk breaks. The methodology page documents the method.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Start a Origin Bank reconciliation by reading the statement's summary block — most layouts print one. It states the opening balance, totals for each activity type, and the closing balance, which gives you four numbers to aim at before any row is touched. If the converted file reproduces the summary totals, remaining differences are categorization questions, not reading errors. The document itself comes from Statements in the Origin Bank website and mobile app; reconcile only against that issued original, never against a re-export or a screenshot.
Monthly reconciliation is usually sold as tidiness, but its sharper value is detection. A transaction nobody recognizes, a fee that quietly changed size, a duplicate payment to the same vendor — all of them surface fastest when someone compares the books to the bank's record every single month, while amounts and memories are fresh. A year of unreconciled statements is where small problems go to become large ones; the monthly habit is the cheapest control a small organization owns.
Work the flagged rows first — the check marks exactly where the arithmetic breaks. The causes section on this page lists the usual suspects in order of likelihood.
Yes — scanned statements convert through OCR and go through the identical checks. Because OCR can misread digits, treat flagged rows on scans with extra care and always resolve them against the image.
Not necessarily — two errors can cancel. Agreement of balances is a hint, not a proof; the proof is the transaction-level comparison a reconciliation performs. Convert and check the statements to be sure.
Banks post corrections as their own dated lines — a reversal and a corrected entry, or a single adjustment line. Enter them exactly as printed, in the period they appear, even if the original transaction sits in an earlier month. The statement is the record; reconciling means matching it, and the pair nets to the truth.
Usually not an error: running balances depend on the order transactions are walked, and the software may order same-day items differently from the bank. Agreement at the closing balance with every transaction present is the substance; mid-month ordering differences on the same posting date are cosmetic.
