A Mechanics Bank month is not done when it is entered — it is done when it reconciles. Here is the workflow that proves each month, and how to hunt the difference when one does not.

Mechanics Bank typically prints the period's opening balance first, works through the activity in date order, and closes with the ending balance the transactions must reproduce. Mechanics Bank is headquartered in Walnut Creek, California, and its statements are issued centrally — the same document family serves every branch and channel.
There is a quiet compound interest to reconciling monthly: each proven month makes the next one cheaper, because the opening balance never needs investigating. The expensive reconciliation is always the first one after a long gap, where every historical shortcut is still hiding. Whether the gap is behind you or ahead of you, the method is the same — prove the file against the statement at conversion, then prove the books against the file in the software. The methodology page documents how the first proof runs.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
A Mechanics Bank statement repays thirty seconds of orientation before any numbers move. Locate the balance pair the month is anchored to — opening and closing on deposit accounts, Previous and New on cards — and scan the transaction list for the period's biggest items, since a reconciliation difference is most often one of them. Note any section subtotals the layout prints; each one is a free checkpoint the converter's running-balance walk also uses. Pull the PDF from Statements and Documents in Mechanics Bank online banking and the mobile app so you are always working from the issued document, not a re-export.
A clean year-end handoff is boring in the best way: the twelve statement PDFs, the twelve converted files with their reconciliation results, and a short list of the items still outstanding at the final closing date. With that package an accountant or a successor bookkeeper can re-perform any month in minutes. The habit that creates it costs nothing — save the conversion result with the statement, every month, while the work is fresh.
Work the flagged rows first — the check marks exactly where the arithmetic breaks. The causes section on this page lists the usual suspects in order of likelihood.
They check different things. The conversion check proves the file matches the statement; the software reconciliation proves the books match the file. Doing both, in that order, is what makes a month solid.
Convert and check each account's statements separately — balances are per account — then reconcile each account in your software. Combined Excel exports keep one sheet per statement so accounts never blur.
You can import in batches, but prove the months individually and in order. Three months reconciled as one blob hides which month owns a difference; the chain check needs each month's closing balance separately.
Usually not an error: running balances depend on the order transactions are walked, and the software may order same-day items differently from the bank. Agreement at the closing balance with every transaction present is the substance; mid-month ordering differences on the same posting date are cosmetic.
