Reconciliation is the proof that the books and the bank agree. This page gives the month-end workflow for Independent Bank statements and the fixes for when they do not tie.
A Independent Bank statement typically shows the balance after each transaction on deposit accounts, so the closing figure can be traced row by row through the month. The institution is based in McKinney, Texas; its statement archive is organized per account, newest period first.
Every statement carries its own test inside it. Add the opening balance to the transactions and you must land on the closing balance; walk the running balance and every row must step correctly from the one before. A conversion that passes both tests has earned trust; one that fails gets fixed against the PDF, not imported and hoped for. That is why the check runs before download here — the methodology page sets out the details.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Reconciliation goes faster when you know the document's habits. On a Independent Bank statement, check where fees and interest sit — inside the chronological flow or in a closing section of their own — because that is where unrecorded items hide. Confirm the statement's closing date matches the period you think you are closing; cycle dates drift from calendar months. And keep the source straight: reconcile against the statement filed under eStatements in Independent Bank online banking and the mobile app, the bank's own record of the month.
Monthly reconciliation is usually sold as tidiness, but its sharper value is detection. A transaction nobody recognizes, a fee that quietly changed size, a duplicate payment to the same vendor — all of them surface fastest when someone compares the books to the bank's record every single month, while amounts and memories are fresh. A year of unreconciled statements is where small problems go to become large ones; the monthly habit is the cheapest control a small organization owns.
They check different things. The conversion check proves the file matches the statement; the software reconciliation proves the books match the file. Doing both, in that order, is what makes a month solid.
Convert and check each account's statements separately — balances are per account — then reconcile each account in your software. Combined Excel exports keep one sheet per statement so accounts never blur.
A cheque written but not yet cleared, or a deposit recorded but not yet at the bank, makes honest books differ from the statement by exactly those items. They are listed, carried forward, and expected to clear next month — they are not errors.
When an account changes product, banks sometimes issue a short final statement for the old product and a first statement for the new one. Convert and prove both; the old one's closing balance should equal the new one's opening balance, and that handover is the seam to verify before anything else.
Usually not an error: running balances depend on the order transactions are walked, and the software may order same-day items differently from the bank. Agreement at the closing balance with every transaction present is the substance; mid-month ordering differences on the same posting date are cosmetic.
