How to reconcile Hanmi Bank statements

Month end with Hanmi Bank means one question: do the books reproduce the bank's record to the cent? Here is the reconciliation workflow that answers it, and the short list of reasons it sometimes answers no.

What you are checking against

A Hanmi Bank statement typically runs as one dated history — deposits, withdrawals and fees in posting order — with the balance shown per transaction on most layouts. Headquartered in Los Angeles, California, Hanmi Bank issues every account's statements through the same online banking platform.

Reconciliation fails in instructive ways, which is why it is worth doing before import rather than after. A difference the size of one transaction means a row is missing or doubled; twice a transaction means a sign flipped; a few cents means a digit was misread somewhere. The check on this page reports which pattern a statement fell into by naming the rows where the running balance breaks, so the hunt starts at the right row instead of the first page. The methodology page explains the arithmetic in full.

The Hanmi Bank month-end reconciliation workflow

  1. Begin with the statement, not the software. Open the month's PDF and read its summary numbers first: opening, totals, closing. The software gets opened second, with the target already known.
  2. Convert and compare totals before rows. Match the converted file's totals to the statement's summary. Totals that agree leave only classification questions; totals that disagree send you to the flagged rows, in order.
  3. Resolve flags while both documents are open. Statement on one side, file on the other, fix each marked row at its source. Flags resolved later are resolved from memory, and memory is how errors get in.
  4. Import and reconcile to the identical closing figure. The software's reconciliation target is the statement's closing balance and closing date — typed from the statement, never from the imported file, so the check stays independent.
  5. Leave the month better documented than you found it. Save the trio — statement, file, result — plus one line noting anything outstanding. The next person to touch this month may be you in a year.

These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.

Reading one Hanmi Bank statement closely

A Hanmi Bank statement repays thirty seconds of orientation before any numbers move. Locate the balance pair the month is anchored to — opening and closing on deposit accounts, Previous and New on cards — and scan the transaction list for the period's biggest items, since a reconciliation difference is most often one of them. Note any section subtotals the layout prints; each one is a free checkpoint the converter's running-balance walk also uses. Pull the PDF from Statements in Hanmi Bank online banking (website and app) so you are always working from the issued document, not a re-export.

When a Hanmi Bank statement does not tie out

Keeping a year chained together

The strongest property of a reconciled year is the chain: twelve statements where every closing balance hands over to the next opening balance without a seam. Build the chain and a whole class of errors — missing months, duplicated months, a statement converted twice — becomes impossible to hide. When a chain breaks, the break itself localizes the problem to the seam between two specific months, which is a five-minute investigation instead of a day of searching.

Questions and answers

How often should I reconcile?

Monthly, in step with the statements. Reconciling a year in one sitting is exactly the catch-up scenario the batch converter exists to shorten — and month-by-month chaining is what makes it provable.

Does reconciling in QuickBooks or Xero replace the conversion check?

They check different things. The conversion check proves the file matches the statement; the software reconciliation proves the books match the file. Doing both, in that order, is what makes a month solid.

The difference is exactly one transaction's amount. Where is it?

Either that transaction is missing from the file or it is in twice. Search the converted file for the amount: zero hits means a dropped row, two hits where the statement shows one means a duplicate.

My software balance and the statement agree, but I never reconciled. Am I fine?

Not necessarily — two errors can cancel. Agreement of balances is a hint, not a proof; the proof is the transaction-level comparison a reconciliation performs. Convert and check the statements to be sure.

Should I reconcile savings and CDs the same way?

Yes, with lower stakes and the same shape: opening balance, interest and any transfers, closing balance. Savings accounts statement monthly at most banks; CDs often statement quarterly or at term events. Prove each document that exists, and let the chain check span the quiet periods.
