If a GreenState Credit Union month will not tie out, the answer is in the statement itself — it always is. This page is the systematic way to find it: anchor the balances, walk the rows, and read the difference as a clue.
GreenState Credit Union member statements typically combine share and checking activity in one document family, each account carrying its own opening and closing balances. Headquartered in North Liberty, Iowa, GreenState Credit Union issues every account's statements through the same online banking platform.
Reconciliation fails in instructive ways, which is why it is worth doing before import rather than after. A difference the size of one transaction means a row is missing or doubled; twice a transaction means a sign flipped; a few cents means a digit was misread somewhere. The check on this page reports which pattern a statement fell into by naming the rows where the running balance breaks, so the hunt starts at the right row instead of the first page. The methodology page explains the arithmetic in full.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Before reconciling a GreenState Credit Union statement, read it once as a document rather than a data source. Find the opening balance on the first page and the closing balance where the period ends, then notice how the middle is organized — one chronological run, or sections for deposits, withdrawals and fees. That structure tells you how a difference will behave: in a sectioned statement, compare section totals first; in a chronological one, the running balance walk is your fastest instrument. The statements themselves are filed under Statements and Documents in GreenState Credit Union online banking and the mobile app, so the document you reconcile is always the bank-issued original.
Most relationships reconcile as a set, not as islands: payments leave the deposit account and land on the card statement, transfers move between accounts, and each leg appears on two statements. Reconcile the deposit account first, then the card, and expect the cross-account transactions to explain each other's odd rows. A difference that survives both reconciliations, in equal and opposite amounts, is almost always a transfer recorded on one side only.
They check different things. The conversion check proves the file matches the statement; the software reconciliation proves the books match the file. Doing both, in that order, is what makes a month solid.
A cheque written but not yet cleared, or a deposit recorded but not yet at the bank, makes honest books differ from the statement by exactly those items. They are listed, carried forward, and expected to clear next month — they are not errors.
A sign error: the transaction was read as money in when it was money out, or the reverse. The totals move by twice the amount because the correction has to both remove the wrong entry and add the right one.
The statement PDF, the converted file, and the reconciliation result for that month, filed together. That trio lets anyone re-perform the month later without asking you anything.
Banks post corrections as their own dated lines — a reversal and a corrected entry, or a single adjustment line. Enter them exactly as printed, in the period they appear, even if the original transaction sits in an earlier month. The statement is the record; reconciling means matching it, and the pair nets to the truth.
