Reconciliation is the proof that the books and the bank agree. This page gives the month-end workflow for Glacier Bank statements and the fixes for when they do not tie.

Glacier Bank typically prints the period's opening balance first, works through the activity in date order, and closes with the ending balance the transactions must reproduce. The institution is based in Kalispell, Montana; its statement archive is organized per account, newest period first.
Every statement carries its own test inside it. Add the opening balance to the transactions and you must land on the closing balance; walk the running balance and every row must step correctly from the one before. A conversion that passes both tests has earned trust; one that fails gets fixed against the PDF, not imported and hoped for. That is why the check runs before download here — the methodology page sets out the details.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
A Glacier Bank statement repays thirty seconds of orientation before any numbers move. Locate the balance pair the month is anchored to — opening and closing on deposit accounts, Previous and New on cards — and scan the transaction list for the period's biggest items, since a reconciliation difference is most often one of them. Note any section subtotals the layout prints; each one is a free checkpoint the converter's running-balance walk also uses. Pull the PDF from Statements & Documents in the Glacier Bank website and mobile app so you are always working from the issued document, not a re-export.
The strongest property of a reconciled year is the chain: twelve statements where every closing balance hands over to the next opening balance without a seam. Build the chain and a whole class of errors — missing months, duplicated months, a statement converted twice — becomes impossible to hide. When a chain breaks, the break itself localizes the problem to the seam between two specific months, which is a five-minute investigation instead of a day of searching.
Deposit statements print an opening and closing balance, and most print a running balance per transaction. Card statements print Previous and New Balances instead. The reconciliation check uses whichever the statement provides; a statement with no balances at all is reported as unverified.
A cheque written but not yet cleared, or a deposit recorded but not yet at the bank, makes honest books differ from the statement by exactly those items. They are listed, carried forward, and expected to clear next month — they are not errors.
Yes — scanned statements convert through OCR and go through the identical checks. Because OCR can misread digits, treat flagged rows on scans with extra care and always resolve them against the image.
The statement PDF, the converted file, and the reconciliation result for that month, filed together. That trio lets anyone re-perform the month later without asking you anything.
Banks post corrections as their own dated lines — a reversal and a corrected entry, or a single adjustment line. Enter them exactly as printed, in the period they appear, even if the original transaction sits in an earlier month. The statement is the record; reconciling means matching it, and the pair nets to the truth.
