Reconciliation is the proof that the books and the bank agree. This page gives the month-end workflow for Flagstar Bank statements and the fixes for when they do not tie.
Flagstar absorbed New York Community Bank's operations, so archives may mix Flagstar and legacy NYCB statement layouts.
Every statement carries its own test inside it. Add the opening balance to the transactions and you must land on the closing balance; walk the running balance and every row must step correctly from the one before. A conversion that passes both tests has earned trust; one that fails gets fixed against the PDF, not imported and hoped for. That is why the check runs before download here — the methodology page sets out the details.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Reconciliation goes faster when you know the document's habits. On a Flagstar Bank statement, check where fees and interest sit — inside the chronological flow or in a closing section of their own — because that is where unrecorded items hide. Confirm the statement's closing date matches the period you think you are closing; cycle dates drift from calendar months. And keep the source straight: reconcile against the statement filed under Statements in Flagstar online banking and the mobile app, the bank's own record of the month.
Inherited books deserve a colder eye: trust nothing that is not tied to a statement. Start at the most recent statement and work backwards only as far as the engagement requires, proving each month against its own document before accepting its closing balance as the next month's ground. Where a predecessor forced a reconciliation to agree, the plug usually sits in an adjustments or suspense entry — find those first, because every honest month built on a plugged balance inherits the error.
Work the flagged rows first — the check marks exactly where the arithmetic breaks. The causes section on this page lists the usual suspects in order of likelihood.
Either that transaction is missing from the file or it is in twice. Search the converted file for the amount: zero hits means a dropped row, two hits where the statement shows one means a duplicate.
In larger setups, separation is a genuine control: the person reconciling is not the person who entered. In a one-person practice the monthly habit plus the filed evidence trio is the practical substitute.
Banks post corrections as their own dated lines — a reversal and a corrected entry, or a single adjustment line. Enter them exactly as printed, in the period they appear, even if the original transaction sits in an earlier month. The statement is the record; reconciling means matching it, and the pair nets to the truth.
Usually not an error: running balances depend on the order transactions are walked, and the software may order same-day items differently from the bank. Agreement at the closing balance with every transaction present is the substance; mid-month ordering differences on the same posting date are cosmetic.
