How to reconcile First PREMIER Bank statements

The difference between books you trust and books you hope are right is one habit: reconciling every First PREMIER Bank statement, in order, against its own balances. Here is that habit as a workflow.

What you are checking against

First PREMIER Bank typically prints the period's opening balance first, works through the activity in date order, and closes with the ending balance the transactions must reproduce. First PREMIER Bank (Sioux Falls, South Dakota) files its statements in the documents area of online banking, organized by account and closing date.

Think of the statement as self-auditing. It opens at one balance, lists everything that moved, and closes at another — and if the list is complete and correctly read, the numbers cannot help but agree. Reconciliation is checking that they do, before the data is trusted downstream. Done at conversion time, the check has a practical shape: the file either reproduces the statement's balances or it is flagged with the exact rows where the walk breaks. The methodology page documents the method.

The First PREMIER Bank month-end reconciliation workflow

  1. Rebuild trust from the last agreed balance. Find the most recent closing balance both sides agreed on — in writing, in a filed result, not from memory. Everything after that point is the work area; everything before it is closed.
  2. Convert forward one month at a time. Each month's conversion carries its own verdict. A clean month extends the agreed chain; a flagged month stops the line until its rows are resolved against the PDF.
  3. Treat outstanding items as first-class citizens. Deposits in transit and uncleared cheques are named, dated and carried on a list — never netted silently into an adjustment. The list is what next month checks first.
  4. Close each month in the software before opening the next PDF. The discipline is sequential on purpose: interleaving months is how a difference loses its address.
  5. Review the chain quarterly. Four times a year, re-read the chain: twelve handovers a year, each closing equalling the next opening. Any break found in review is found while the trail is warm.

These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.

Reading one First PREMIER Bank statement closely

Before reconciling a First PREMIER Bank statement, read it once as a document rather than a data source. Find the opening balance on the first page and the closing balance where the period ends, then notice how the middle is organized — one chronological run, or sections for deposits, withdrawals and fees. That structure tells you how a difference will behave: in a sectioned statement, compare section totals first; in a chronological one, the running balance walk is your fastest instrument. The statements themselves are filed under Statements and Documents in the First PREMIER Bank website and mobile app, so the document you reconcile is always the bank-issued original.

When a First PREMIER Bank statement does not tie out

Teaching the routine to a successor

Reconciliation knowledge tends to live in one person's head, which makes it fragile. The defence is a written routine — this page is a template — plus the filed evidence trio for each month: statement, converted file, result. A successor who inherits both can reproduce any month without interviewing anyone, and the standard survives staff changes, vacations and growth.

Questions and answers

How often should I reconcile?

Monthly, in step with the statements. Reconciling a year in one sitting is exactly the catch-up scenario the batch converter exists to shorten — and month-by-month chaining is what makes it provable.

What does an outstanding item mean for reconciliation?

A cheque written but not yet cleared, or a deposit recorded but not yet at the bank, makes honest books differ from the statement by exactly those items. They are listed, carried forward, and expected to clear next month — they are not errors.

The difference is exactly one transaction's amount. Where is it?

Either that transaction is missing from the file or it is in twice. Search the converted file for the amount: zero hits means a dropped row, two hits where the statement shows one means a duplicate.

Can I reconcile from a scan?

Yes — scanned statements convert through OCR and go through the identical checks. Because OCR can misread digits, treat flagged rows on scans with extra care and always resolve them against the image.

My software balance and the statement agree, but I never reconciled. Am I fine?

Not necessarily — two errors can cancel. Agreement of balances is a hint, not a proof; the proof is the transaction-level comparison a reconciliation performs. Convert and check the statements to be sure.
