Downloading statements sounds trivial until a year of them has to agree with itself. This guide covers the First Commonwealth Bank archive properly: where statements live, which file to take, and how to keep a long download complete.
Privacy: uploaded files and generated exports are stored only briefly to complete your download and are automatically deleted within 15 minutes. Files are never used for any other purpose.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Most accounts statement monthly, closing on the same cycle date each month. Online statement archives typically reach back several years; when a cleanup needs months beyond the online archive, the route is a statement request to the bank — branches and phone support can usually produce older PDFs or paper copies for a closed period, and those paper copies convert through the scanned (OCR) route with the same reconciliation check.
Expect the standard regional-bank set: monthly statements for checking and savings with opening and closing balances and a running balance on most layouts, card statements on the Previous / New Balance pattern where the bank issues its own cards, and periodic statements for CDs and money market accounts. Each type converts separately, against its own balances. Deposit statements at First Commonwealth Bank typically carry opening and closing balances with activity in posting order; card statements, where the bank issues its own cards, use Previous and New Balances. The institution is based in Indiana, Pennsylvania; its statement archive is organized per account, newest period first.
If the account still receives paper statements, the fastest upgrade in any bookkeeping workflow is switching it to eStatements in First Commonwealth Bank online banking and the mobile app — every future month then exists as a first-generation PDF. For months already past, paper scans convert through OCR with the same balance check; scan flat, straight and at a steady resolution, and review flagged rows against the image. Avoid the middle option — printing an online statement to paper and scanning it back — which destroys the digital original for no benefit.
It adds the extracted transactions to the statement's opening balance and compares the result with the closing balance — and checks running balances row by row where printed. Downloads that do not tie are flagged, never passed silently.
Both. The PDF is the record; the converted Excel or CSV is the working file. Sending the pair means any figure can be traced back to the bank's own document in one step.
Many banks offer a transaction download in CSV or OFX alongside the PDF statements. That covers recent activity, but the PDF statement remains the document with balances — the thing reconciliation is checked against.
Some relationships offer combined statements covering several accounts in one PDF. Download it once, then convert each account's section separately so every account keeps its own balance check.
Statements close on a cycle date set by the bank, which is often a few days before or after month end. Work in statement periods when you import — the closing date on the document is the period's end, whatever the calendar says — and let the balance chain, not the calendar, tell you whether a month is missing.
