Reconciliation is the proof that the books and the bank agree. This page gives the month-end workflow for Digital Federal Credit Union statements and the fixes for when they do not tie.
As a credit union, Digital Federal Credit Union statements the membership rather than a single account: share savings, checking and sometimes loan activity are commonly combined in one document, opening with a summary of each account. Digital Federal Credit Union is a credit union headquartered in Marlborough, Massachusetts.
Think of the statement as self-auditing. It opens at one balance, lists everything that moved, and closes at another — and if the list is complete and correctly read, the numbers cannot help but agree. Reconciliation is checking that they do, before the data is trusted downstream. Done at conversion time, the check has a practical shape: the file either reproduces the statement's balances or it is flagged with the exact rows where the walk breaks. The methodology page documents the method.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Start a Digital Federal Credit Union reconciliation by reading the statement's summary block — most layouts print one. It states the opening balance, totals for each activity type, and the closing balance, which gives you four numbers to aim at before any row is touched. If the converted file reproduces the summary totals, remaining differences are categorization questions, not reading errors. The document itself comes from eStatements in the Digital Federal Credit Union website and mobile app; reconcile only against that issued original, never against a re-export or a screenshot.
An account is only fully proven when two different comparisons agree: the file against the statement (was the data read correctly?) and the books against the file (was it entered and categorized without loss?). Skipping the first makes the second prove the wrong thing beautifully — the software will happily reconcile to a file that misread the statement. Keeping the two checks separate, in that order, is what makes a discrepancy localizable in minutes.
Convert and check each account's statements separately — balances are per account — then reconcile each account in your software. Combined Excel exports keep one sheet per statement so accounts never blur.
A cheque written but not yet cleared, or a deposit recorded but not yet at the bank, makes honest books differ from the statement by exactly those items. They are listed, carried forward, and expected to clear next month — they are not errors.
Not necessarily — two errors can cancel. Agreement of balances is a hint, not a proof; the proof is the transaction-level comparison a reconciliation performs. Convert and check the statements to be sure.
Banks post corrections as their own dated lines — a reversal and a corrected entry, or a single adjustment line. Enter them exactly as printed, in the period they appear, even if the original transaction sits in an earlier month. The statement is the record; reconciling means matching it, and the pair nets to the truth.
When an account changes product, banks sometimes issue a short final statement for the old product and a first statement for the new one. Convert and prove both; the old one's closing balance should equal the new one's opening balance, and that handover is the seam to verify before anything else.
