Reconciliation is the proof that the books and the bank agree. This page gives the month-end workflow for DFCU Financial statements and the fixes for when they do not tie.

A DFCU Financial statement typically opens with a per-account summary, then lists each account's transactions in date order with its own balances — members with only a share savings account may be statemented quarterly. The institution is based in Dearborn, Michigan; its statement archive is organized per account, newest period first.
Whatever the layout, the arithmetic underneath a statement is always the same shape: an opening figure, the period's transactions, and a closing figure the transactions must reproduce exactly. Reconciliation is the discipline of insisting on that proof for every month, in order. The converter runs the check at conversion time — totals first, then the running balance row by row — so a bad file is caught before it reaches the books, and the methodology page explains both checks in full.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Start a DFCU Financial reconciliation by reading the statement's summary block — most layouts print one. It states the opening balance, totals for each activity type, and the closing balance, which gives you four numbers to aim at before any row is touched. If the converted file reproduces the summary totals, remaining differences are categorization questions, not reading errors. The document itself comes from Statements and Documents in DFCU Financial online banking and the mobile app; reconcile only against that issued original, never against a re-export or a screenshot.
An account is only fully proven when two different comparisons agree: the file against the statement (was the data read correctly?) and the books against the file (was it entered and categorized without loss?). Skipping the first makes the second prove the wrong thing beautifully — the software will happily reconcile to a file that misread the statement. Keeping the two checks separate, in that order, is what makes a discrepancy localizable in minutes.
Either that transaction is missing from the file or it is in twice. Search the converted file for the amount: zero hits means a dropped row, two hits where the statement shows one means a duplicate.
Yes — scanned statements convert through OCR and go through the identical checks. Because OCR can misread digits, treat flagged rows on scans with extra care and always resolve them against the image.
The statement PDF, the converted file, and the reconciliation result for that month, filed together. That trio lets anyone re-perform the month later without asking you anything.
In larger setups, separation is a genuine control: the person reconciling is not the person who entered. In a one-person practice the monthly habit plus the filed evidence trio is the practical substitute.
Banks post corrections as their own dated lines — a reversal and a corrected entry, or a single adjustment line. Enter them exactly as printed, in the period they appear, even if the original transaction sits in an earlier month. The statement is the record; reconciling means matching it, and the pair nets to the truth.
