How to reconcile Credit Union of Texas statements

A Credit Union of Texas month is not done when it is entered — it is done when it reconciles. Here is the workflow that proves each month, and how to hunt the difference when one does not.

What you are checking against

A Credit Union of Texas statement typically opens with a per-account summary, then lists each account's transactions in date order with its own balances — members with only a share savings account may be statemented quarterly. From its headquarters in Allen, Texas, Credit Union of Texas issues statements per account and per period through online banking.

Every statement carries its own test inside it. Add the opening balance to the transactions and you must land on the closing balance; walk the running balance and every row must step correctly from the one before. A conversion that passes both tests has earned trust; one that fails gets fixed against the PDF, not imported and hoped for. That is why the check runs before download here — the methodology page sets out the details.

The Credit Union of Texas month-end reconciliation workflow

  1. Start from the last proven month. Reconciliation builds on solid ground: the last month whose closing balance you have already proven. Everything after it is worked in order.
  2. Convert the statement. Upload the month's PDF and read the reconciliation result before importing anything. Reconciled means the extracted transactions reproduce the statement's own balances.
  3. Resolve flags against the PDF. If the conversion flags rows, correct them against the statement now — importing first and fixing later doubles the work.
  4. Import and reconcile in your software. Bring the verified file into QuickBooks or Xero and reconcile the month there against the same closing balance.
  5. Chain the months. Confirm this month's closing balance equals next month's opening balance before moving on. A break in the chain is a missing or duplicated statement, and it is cheapest to find now.

These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.

Reading one Credit Union of Texas statement closely

Before reconciling a Credit Union of Texas statement, read it once as a document rather than a data source. Find the opening balance on the first page and the closing balance where the period ends, then notice how the middle is organized — one chronological run, or sections for deposits, withdrawals and fees. That structure tells you how a difference will behave: in a sectioned statement, compare section totals first; in a chronological one, the running balance walk is your fastest instrument. The statements themselves are filed under Statements and Documents in the Credit Union of Texas website and mobile app, so the document you reconcile is always the bank-issued original.

When a Credit Union of Texas statement does not tie out

Teaching the routine to a successor

Reconciliation knowledge tends to live in one person's head, which makes it fragile. The defence is a written routine — this page is a template — plus the filed evidence trio for each month: statement, converted file, result. A successor who inherits both can reproduce any month without interviewing anyone, and the standard survives staff changes, vacations and growth.

Questions and answers

Which balances does a Credit Union of Texas statement print?

Deposit statements print an opening and closing balance, and most print a running balance per transaction. Card statements print Previous and New Balances instead. The reconciliation check uses whichever the statement provides; a statement with no balances at all is reported as unverified.

How often should I reconcile?

Monthly, in step with the statements. Reconciling a year in one sitting is exactly the catch-up scenario the batch converter exists to shorten — and month-by-month chaining is what makes it provable.

The difference is exactly one transaction's amount. Where is it?

Either that transaction is missing from the file or it is in twice. Search the converted file for the amount: zero hits means a dropped row, two hits where the statement shows one means a duplicate.

The difference is double a transaction's amount. What does that tell me?

A sign error: the transaction was read as money in when it was money out, or the reverse. The totals move by twice the amount because the correction has to both remove the wrong entry and add the right one.

My software balance and the statement agree, but I never reconciled. Am I fine?

Not necessarily — two errors can cancel. Agreement of balances is a hint, not a proof; the proof is the transaction-level comparison a reconciliation performs. Convert and check the statements to be sure.
