Reconciliation is the proof that the books and the bank agree. This page gives the month-end workflow for City National Bank statements and the fixes for when they do not tie.
City National Bank statements typically list transactions chronologically with a running balance on deposit accounts, and print opening and closing balances for the period. The institution is based in Los Angeles, California; its statement archive is organized per account, newest period first.
Every statement carries its own test inside it. Add the opening balance to the transactions and you must land on the closing balance; walk the running balance and every row must step correctly from the one before. A conversion that passes both tests has earned trust; one that fails gets fixed against the PDF, not imported and hoped for. That is why the check runs before download here — the methodology page sets out the details.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
One habit separates fast reconciliations from slow ones: read a City National Bank statement in the order the bank printed it before sorting it any other way. Running balances only make sense in print order, pending items cluster at period boundaries in print order, and the bank's own section subtotals — free checkpoints — exist only in print order. Convert the PDF from Statements in the City National Bank website and mobile app, walk it as printed, and let the accounting software do the reordering afterwards.
A clean year-end handoff is boring in the best way: the twelve statement PDFs, the twelve converted files with their reconciliation results, and a short list of the items still outstanding at the final closing date. With that package an accountant or a successor bookkeeper can re-perform any month in minutes. The habit that creates it costs nothing — save the conversion result with the statement, every month, while the work is fresh.
They check different things. The conversion check proves the file matches the statement; the software reconciliation proves the books match the file. Doing both, in that order, is what makes a month solid.
A cheque written but not yet cleared, or a deposit recorded but not yet at the bank, makes honest books differ from the statement by exactly those items. They are listed, carried forward, and expected to clear next month — they are not errors.
Yes. Small differences are usually misread digits or rounding on a split transaction, and they compound silently if waved through. A reconciliation that tolerates cents teaches the whole file to drift.
You can import in batches, but prove the months individually and in order. Three months reconciled as one blob hides which month owns a difference; the chain check needs each month's closing balance separately.
Not necessarily — two errors can cancel. Agreement of balances is a hint, not a proof; the proof is the transaction-level comparison a reconciliation performs. Convert and check the statements to be sure.
