Statements first, spreadsheets second. What follows is how Bread Financial files its statements, how to download the exact periods a job requires, and how those PDFs become verified data.

These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Statement archives are organized by closing date, newest first, and usually searchable or filterable by year. For a full-year catch-up, work the list methodically from the oldest month forward and save each PDF as you go — partial downloads are how gap months happen. If the archive offers a combined or annual document, prefer the individual monthly statements: each one carries its own opening and closing balances, which is what the reconciliation check needs.
Bread Financial has no branches and no paper workflow: the documents area of the app or website is the whole archive, holding statements alongside tax documents and account notices. That is an advantage for bookkeeping — every period is a first-generation digital PDF, the cleanest possible input for conversion. It also means there is no branch fallback for very old periods, so download history earlier rather than later if an account may close. Bread Financial statements are generated digitally from the first day of the account — there is no paper original — and each period's PDF prints the balances the conversion is checked against. From its headquarters in Columbus, Ohio, Bread Financial issues statements per account and per period through online banking.
Online access usually ends when an account closes, and with it the self-serve archive. Former customers can typically still obtain statement copies by request — expect identity verification and a research turnaround rather than an instant download. Order them before the cleanup deadline, not during it. When the copies arrive as paper or scans, they convert through the OCR route and are reconciled against their printed balances like any other statement.
Separate months. Each monthly statement carries its own opening and closing balances, which is what the verification works from — and month-by-month files import in order without surgery.
Yes — that is the normal flow. Download the PDFs and send them as issued; your bookkeeper converts and verifies them. Never send online banking passwords; statements are all a bookkeeper needs from the bank.
Common causes: the account statemented quarterly in that period, the account was opened or closed mid-cycle, or the statement sits under a combined-statement view. Check the neighbouring months' balances — if they chain, the period is covered.
Many banks offer a transaction download in CSV or OFX alongside the PDF statements. That covers recent activity, but the PDF statement remains the document with balances — the thing reconciliation is checked against.
Statements close on a cycle date set by the bank, which is often a few days before or after month end. Work in statement periods when you import — the closing date on the document is the period's end, whatever the calendar says — and let the balance chain, not the calendar, tell you whether a month is missing.
