A BankUnited month is not done when it is entered — it is done when it reconciles. Here is the workflow that proves each month, and how to hunt the difference when one does not.

BankUnited statements typically organize activity by type on business accounts and chronologically on personal ones, with the period's balances printed on the first page. Headquartered in Miami Lakes, Florida, BankUnited issues every account's statements through the same online banking platform.
Whatever the layout, the arithmetic underneath a statement is always the same shape: an opening figure, the period's transactions, and a closing figure the transactions must reproduce exactly. Reconciliation is the discipline of insisting on that proof for every month, in order. The converter runs the check at conversion time — totals first, then the running balance row by row — so a bad file is caught before it reaches the books, and the methodology page explains both checks in full.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
Before reconciling a BankUnited statement, read it once as a document rather than a data source. Find the opening balance on the first page and the closing balance where the period ends, then notice how the middle is organized — one chronological run, or sections for deposits, withdrawals and fees. That structure tells you how a difference will behave: in a sectioned statement, compare section totals first; in a chronological one, the running balance walk is your fastest instrument. The statements themselves are filed under Statements and Documents in the BankUnited website and mobile app, so the document you reconcile is always the bank-issued original.
A clean year-end handoff is boring in the best way: the twelve statement PDFs, the twelve converted files with their reconciliation results, and a short list of the items still outstanding at the final closing date. With that package an accountant or a successor bookkeeper can re-perform any month in minutes. The habit that creates it costs nothing — save the conversion result with the statement, every month, while the work is fresh.
Work the flagged rows first — the check marks exactly where the arithmetic breaks. The causes section on this page lists the usual suspects in order of likelihood.
Convert and check each account's statements separately — balances are per account — then reconcile each account in your software. Combined Excel exports keep one sheet per statement so accounts never blur.
Either that transaction is missing from the file or it is in twice. Search the converted file for the amount: zero hits means a dropped row, two hits where the statement shows one means a duplicate.
Not necessarily — two errors can cancel. Agreement of balances is a hint, not a proof; the proof is the transaction-level comparison a reconciliation performs. Convert and check the statements to be sure.
Usually not an error: running balances depend on the order transactions are walked, and the software may order same-day items differently from the bank. Agreement at the closing balance with every transaction present is the substance; mid-month ordering differences on the same posting date are cosmetic.
