Reconciling is not bookkeeping's paperwork — it is the audit trail that makes every other number believable. The Bank of Oklahoma version of the routine is on this page, balances first, exceptions documented.
A Bank of Oklahoma statement typically shows the balance after each transaction on deposit accounts, so the closing figure can be traced row by row through the month. Bank of Oklahoma (Tulsa, Oklahoma) files its statements in the documents area of online banking, organized by account and closing date.
Whatever the layout, the arithmetic underneath a statement is always the same shape: an opening figure, the period's transactions, and a closing figure the transactions must reproduce exactly. Reconciliation is the discipline of insisting on that proof for every month, in order. The converter runs the check at conversion time — totals first, then the running balance row by row — so a bad file is caught before it reaches the books, and the methodology page explains both checks in full.
These are the general steps most banks follow for statement downloads; exact menu labels vary by bank and change over time.
A Bank of Oklahoma statement repays thirty seconds of orientation before any numbers move. Locate the balance pair the month is anchored to — opening and closing on deposit accounts, Previous and New on cards — and scan the transaction list for the period's biggest items, since a reconciliation difference is most often one of them. Note any section subtotals the layout prints; each one is a free checkpoint the converter's running-balance walk also uses. Pull the PDF from Statements & Documents in the Bank of Oklahoma website and mobile app so you are always working from the issued document, not a re-export.
Reconciliation knowledge tends to live in one person's head, which makes it fragile. The defence is a written routine — this page is a template — plus the filed evidence trio for each month: statement, converted file, result. A successor who inherits both can reproduce any month without interviewing anyone, and the standard survives staff changes, vacations and growth.
Deposit statements print an opening and closing balance, and most print a running balance per transaction. Card statements print Previous and New Balances instead. The reconciliation check uses whichever the statement provides; a statement with no balances at all is reported as unverified.
Either that transaction is missing from the file or it is in twice. Search the converted file for the amount: zero hits means a dropped row, two hits where the statement shows one means a duplicate.
You can import in batches, but prove the months individually and in order. Three months reconciled as one blob hides which month owns a difference; the chain check needs each month's closing balance separately.
In larger setups, separation is a genuine control: the person reconciling is not the person who entered. In a one-person practice the monthly habit plus the filed evidence trio is the practical substitute.
Banks post corrections as their own dated lines — a reversal and a corrected entry, or a single adjustment line. Enter them exactly as printed, in the period they appear, even if the original transaction sits in an earlier month. The statement is the record; reconciling means matching it, and the pair nets to the truth.
